I remember attending a class in family transitions , issues on separation, divorce, abuse, illness and loss were discussed. Of course about 99% of the class could relate to these transitions. As we listen to our professor lecturing and as we also watched videos, there were a lot of TRIGGERS in the class. Of course my professor said it was not unusual because people experience triggers when they hear their story from somebody else’s story.
Many tears, many stories from some of us and the class turned to a healing and recovery centre. Some who had never talked about their family transitions and its impact on them spoke out for the first time and come and see empathy just flying across the class.
You can only understand triggers in the light of your own experience (s) in life.
So next time you see someone acting out please ask WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU?
